EveryBodies Stripes

year: 2019

Three white stripes sawn parallel onto black polyester fabric alongside the arms and legs of a set of garment, the so-called Adidas original tracksuit. The iconic two piece get-up.

The well known apparel went global in 1967 when Adidas launched it’s first tracksuit named after the German soccer star, Franz Beckenbauer. Till then worn almost exclusively before and/or after sports, it was in the ‘70s that tracksuits began to blend with fashion. But how this set of garment travelled through time? What interpretation it had in the West and in the Eastern part of Europe? And where is it now? Can a matching three striped suit hold a group of youngsters together in Russia and if so how this symbolic uniform became so popular in the Western society nowadays?

The exhibition was part of the orchid and the wasp project curated by Maud Oonk.
